MASVINGO – Six robbers suspected to be part of a gang that assaulted and threw a Mucheke couple into a mine shaft on Thursday last week resulting in the death of the woman have been arrested in Harare today.
A seventh member of the gang that stripped the couple of US$4 000, RTGS$500 000 and other currencies escaped during the arrest.
Police spokesperson, Kudakwashe Dhewa said he was not in the office when The Mirror called him for a comment. Impeccable sources however, told The Mirror that the suspects will be brought back to Masvingo from Harare for further investigations either tonight or tomorrow morning.
Obvious Nhokovedza (44) and his wife Rutendo Ndega (35) were thrown into a 20-metre-deep shaft on the outskirts of Target Kopje in Masvingo after being stripped of R800, $15 000 in an Ecocash account, $500 000 and US$ 4 000 in bank cards, a Samsung cell phone and a Nissan Caravan.

The gang arrived at the couple’s house on Thursday afternoon and tied the woman with a rope. Nhokovedza arrived home later from Zaka and he also had his hands and legs tied. The two were severely assaulted before being taken to a nearby hill where they were thrown into the shaft after disclosing pin numbers for their bank cards to the suspects.
They couple was retrieved from the shaft on Friday afternoon after a passer-by heard their cries for help. Ndega died on arrival at Masvingo Provincial Hospital while her husband is still admitted with serious head injuries
